Ahead of the Cannes Film Festival next month, Warner Bros. International Television Production Sweden today announces that it has appointed Greek boutique film house Heretic as international sales agent of Adult Supervision, the debut feature film written and directed by acclaimed Swedish author Alex Schulman.
Schulman is best known internationally for his bestselling novels and the widely followed Alex & Sigge’s podcast. Adult Supervision – known locally as Arkipelag – marks his directorial debut, where he also serves as screenwriter.
The film follows three middle-aged fathers who join their teenage daughters on a school trip to a remote island. What begins as a seemingly routine excursion quickly spirals into something far more unsettling, as they are pulled into conflicts that stir dark memories from their own pasts, the boundaries between play and dangerous power struggles dissolve — and victims and perpetrators become impossible to tell apart.
Heretic will introduce the film to buyers at a market screening during the Cannes Marché du Film at 13:30, Wednesday 13th May, in the Lerins 2 theatre.
Ioanna Stais, Heretic’s Head of Sales says: “Alex Schulman has crafted a dark comedy that feels both sharply observed and deeply disquieting — there’s a provocative edge to the humour that constantly teeters on something more dangerous. It’s a bold debut that balances tone in a very precise and unexpected way, and we’re excited to bring it to audiences internationally.”
Alex Schulman, Director and Screenwriter adds: “I wanted to make a film where the laughter catches in your throat — where you are smiling one moment and deeply uncomfortable the next. I'm glad Heretic understood that immediately.”
Christina Legkova, Producer comments: “Heretic’s commitment to bold, auteur-driven cinema makes them the ideal partner for Adult Supervision, and we are thrilled to have them on board to distribute the film internationally. We couldn’t imagine better hands to bring Alex Schulman’s remarkable directorial debut to audiences around the world.”
The film brings together three of Scandinavia’s most prominent actors: Gustaf Skarsgård (Vikings, Westworld), Fares Fares (The Nile Hilton Incident) and Linus Wahlgren. Schulman worked with cinematographer Jakob Ihre, longtime collaborator of Joachim Trier, and Emmy-winning director of photography on HBO’s Chernobyl.
Adult Supervision is produced by Warner Bros. International Television Production Sweden, with Christina Legkova as producer and Sofie Palage and Johan Hedman as executive producers. It is co-produced by RMV Film, Tiisch Film AB, Film Stockholm AB and Scanbox Entertainment, with support from the Swedish Film Institute and the Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Growth. It is distributed in Sweden by Scanbox Entertainment.
